Just as an anecdote, I could trace the proverb:
"Quem enim diligit dominus corripit, flagellat autem omnem filium quem recipit"
which is a citation from the Bible, New Testament, Hebrews 12:6. It is translated this way in the King James Bible:
"For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth".
In french:
"Car le Seigneur châtie celui qu'il aime, Et il frappe de la verge tous ceux qu'il reconnaît pour ses fils".
